It was a time of legends, wizards, and heroes...

And our heroes have yet to enter their story. In a time when everything is centered around the practice of magic and sorcery. The island of Pagonia was a land cut off from that practice. There were no wizards, no witches, and no sorcerers on the island. It wasn't legal anyway. The owner of the island did not permit any of that as long as you were on his soil. Those who were caught would suffer consequences no mere mortal were meant to suffer.

The Phantom Blot did not like competition.

Most people were safe though. The island lacked anything magical. It was surrounded by five dragon's feet of water from all sides. Pagonia was literally a smudge on the map, surrounded by a big crystal pool. The land stuck out among the water though. The land was nature's palace, and she made a masterpiece out of the land of Pagonia. It was large enough to fit thirteen villages, but there was only one there. That meant the natural beauty had room to spread its wings. There were purple mountains rising in the West, white sandy beaches in the South, gentle green pine forests in the East, and gray cliffs in the North. It was a beautiful home for CK and Kitty Kubbles.

CK didn't know of the Blot when he originally moved to the island. He never read the news. A giraffe could only take so much sad news. He only wished for happiness throughout the land, and that was why he moved to Pagonia. He hoped to bring a few chuckles to the inhabitants who lived on the island. He succeeded. He quickly settled into his surroundings and built himself a home.

A big, red, two story barn. CK liked to be different, and living in a barn certainly was. But there was logistics to his thinking. A barn was big enough to hold in five people, which meant plenty of space for him. It was also cool in the summer and warm in the winter. CK had built himself a good home. But just as he was about to move in, the Blot sent his agent in to harass the giraffe.

The meeting between the two was awkward. Since CK was autistic and shy around people he just met, this one made him shiver. She was cold, unfriendly, and nearly heartless. At least CK couldn't see her. She was wearing a long, near skin tight, silk black cloak. It made her sharp pink eyes pop. She came to tell CK that rent was required in order to live in his own house. At first, CK tried to joke his way out of it. But he quickly learned that she had a cruel, sick, twisted sense of humor. CK thought he was done for!

That is until Kitty Kubbles stepped in.

Kitty Kubbles was new to the island. In fact, she had just got off the boat five minutes before the agent started harassing CK. Unlike CK Kitty was highly sociable. She was a cat with the perkiest attitude you'd ever find. And above all else, she didn't enjoy harassment. As a youngling she was constantly teased for her height and personality. Two things that didn't deserve punishment for being the way they were. So when Kitty saw CK's situation, she stepped up to help the poor giraffe.

She told the agent that she would help CK from now on with the rent and that the two were roommates. Thankfully for CK, the agent bought it. She was paid for the first three months by both cat and giraffe and then went her merry way. Or her version of merry anyway. When the two were sure she was on the boat and off the island, the giraffe thanked the cat. She blushed cherry red and said it was her pleasure. Ever since then, the two had been both friends and roommates.

Neither did the two of them know that their friendship would lead them on one of the greatest adventures of their lives.

*****

It was around midday, and CK was sweeping the inside of his humble home. The inside wasn't much compared to the outside. The second floor was basically along platform with three stalls, and the downstairs was comprised two stalls and an open space. The three stalls up stairs made the two bedrooms and guest room, while the two stalls downstairs were the bathing room to the right and kitchen to the left. The rest of it made up the living room. Like the rest of the inside it was simple and modest: a wooden table with a candle on top, with two stools for sitting.

If you asked him, CK would tell you he'd prefer sweeping than going outside. You could tell he barely got any sun by how pale he was and how many freckles covered his face. Also on his face covering his bright blue eyes were a pair of glasses. He was near sited and needed the aid in seeing things far away. At the bottom of his long neck was a purple wrap. He wore a light orange poncho with red orange trimmings and a yellow arrow as the logo. The poncho seemed to pop against the light blue shirt and teal blue pants, which was held up by a brown belt around his waist.

Since there wasn't much to sweep, CK was able to finish in time for lunch. But seeing how he wasn't hungry, the tall mammal just stood there, thinking. He and Kitty were artists, which meant they were always brainstorming ideas. CK always thought of funny and odd things to draw. After all, he was an oddball. And right now, he had a really odd idea. First, he made sure no one else was in the barn watching him. When the coast was clear, he took the broom and held it close to his mouth.

That's when he started singing, "Oh, I'm alone in my barn, so alone. Kitty's gone and I'm here by myself, hence me singing about how alone I am. If I wasn't alone, this song wouldn't make much sense, no! But since I'm alone no one can hear me sing… So I'm gonna rock like there's no tomorrow! I'm gonna pop like the hurt is gone! I'm gonna jomba to a samba, so get out of my way!"

As he sang, CK began to dance around with the broomstick like it was a person. There wasn't any patterns to his moves, he just wanted to dance as if all the world's troubles had disappeared. CK loved dancing, even if he wasn't the best at it. And right now, he was dancing like crazy.

"And I say Hey-O! Tonight I'm gonna party like a harty so don't farty all over my parade! Don't you get in my way! I'm gonna rock out so bock out and get out of my way! Cause I'm here to stay. And either way, I'm gonna dance all night and day. So get out of my way!"

CK than jumped up into the air, and as he hit the floor did a split. He quickly realized how stupid an idea he was when he felt how hard the floor was. That and he couldn't do a split anyway. The pain was excruciating, but he didn't cry. He just dumped down onto the floor, wondering to himself: Why the heck did you do that you idiot?

That's when his large ears picked up a small noise: a quaint chuckle. A kind of chuckle that made you feel good about yourself, even when you just did something stupid. That chuckles made CK smiled as he said to the person standing in the doorway, "So, how much of that did you see?

Kitty was like CK in some ways. Like CK she had pale fur, only hers was gray. She also had wild hair, pointy pink ears, and a ice white face. The sea blue jewel she owned held the small teal scarf around her neck. The jacket she wore over her white shirt was gray with purple cuffs, which matched her purple skirt. Unlike CK though, she wore shoes: pointy toed gray ones that on anyone else would look like cow manure. She made them work.

She giggled as she replied to her friend, "Oh, pretty much all of it."

"Well, I'm sorry to tell ya' this Kit," CK joked, "but I'm gonna have to kill you."

"Aww," Kitty joked back. "But I liked it. You oughta do stuff like that more often."

"Yeah because as we all know I'm that outgoing sort of person. You know me Kit, I'm too shy around people. It's a miracle you and I became friends in the first place. Besides, there are better singers in the world than me. Singers people actually want to hear."

While CK slowly got back up, fighting back the pain he felt below the belt, Kitty said, "Oh c'mon CK, you're good. You gotta take some risks. C'mon, go out there and see the world. Heck, we should get off this island and do something wild and crazy."

"You have fun with that," CK said. He eased his way onto the wooden stool, taking his sweet time doing so. He kept repeating in his head: Don't you ever do that again! Don't you ever do that again! Don't you ever do that again! Don't you ever do that again! Don't you ever do that again! Don't you ever do that again!

"C'mon CK, come with me, leave this place," Kitty began to beg. It was sad her friend had no intention of leaving the island, and she wasn't going to leave him here. "You're just as bored as I am, and there's nothing around here to do. And above all else, wouldn't you like to get away from the Blot and-"

"Sssh," the giraffe motioned for her to stop talking. "Quiet, you might bring the hammer down on us!"

Kitty sighed. This wasn't the first time she had brought this idea up before. This also hasn't been the first time she failed. CK was too afraid of the Blot. Everyone was. They were just as afraid of his as much as they hated him. And boy did they hate him. He was the giant, ink black, menacing shadow that always overlooked the island. And as if he wasn't enough his agent always came down to the island for inspections. Kitty hated the way they had everyone under their thumb.

And so did CK. A part of him wanted to leave, so desperately at that. But how could they? Even if they got to the docking bay where would they go from there? The world was buzzing about wizardry and neither of them were wizards. The only power they had was their abilities to draw and write. No one would care. But by the look on Kitty's face, CK could tell that this time the discussion had to change. As gently as he could, he waddled up to her and said, "Okay, how about this? If you can convince me before midnight that this is a good idea, I'll join you on this adventure."

Kitty suddenly seem to snap back to perky mode as she snapped back up and smiled. She was so happy, she had finally gotten through to him. She hollered, "Yes! Oh, just you wait my friend, I will convince you so hard to leave this place, you'll think that this was all your idea!" Just as she said that, she noticed the position of her shadow. It was no longer in front of her, but far behind her. Looking out the window, she could see the sun setting in for its long nap. That meant it was time. "Can I borrow your paintbrush?"

A few minutes later and Kitty was outside wondering the forests of Pagonia.  As the moon began to overpower the bright sun, the cat switched to night vision to wander the forest. She used the paintbrush and a small paper pad to create images of everything she saw. As she took note of everything, she began to ask herself questions. The most important one was how she was going to convince her best friend how to leave the island. He was autistic, and had everything he needed here anyways. It was like asking a fish to move out of the water and onto dry land. But then she considered that's how dragons evolved. If it could be done once, it could be done before.

Kitty continued to think as she wandered her way through the thick pine trees. She could smell the fresh rugid air the pine needles gave off, and felt the cool night air flow through her fur. She felt at ease, she felt calm, she felt-

A sudden rush as she fell on her face. For a moment there, she was dazed and had no idea what had just happened? Had she been clumsy and simply fell? As soon as she regained full consciousness, she realized that she had fell six feet off the edge of a cliff and was now sitting at the mouth of a gigantic cave opening. She looked around, as if waiting for someone to tell her what to do next. Should she just go back up the cliff? Or dare venture inwards into the cave?

Suddenly, as if to answer her question, something strange happened: the inside of the cave began to glow. The rocks seemed to light up as a damp light began to flicker at the end of the tunnel. Kitty's eyes began to sparkle and shine as her cat instincts took over and led her inside. Between the flickers of light, Kitty depended on her feline sense to guide her through. She could smell water up ahead, and could feel the drippy mold that was forming on the rocky cave walls. She moved carefully, allowing herself to be prepared for whatever it was. But when she got there, she was stunned by what she saw.

It was an oasis! An underground one hidden by the rocks. It glowed bright blue as the diamond clean water poured out into a tiny crystal pool. Kitty rushed over to the large puddle and looked it. It was so clean and clear she couldn't resist taking a small sip. But as she dipped her tongue in and out- like most cats did- she felt an odd sensation. She stopped drinking for a minute to get a good look at the pool. It was deep, but there was enough light to for her to see three shiny objects at the bottom. Once again your natural cat instincts took over and she put her hand down in the water to reach for them.

Her arm was too short.

That's when she remembered the paintbrush! She rushed her dry paw into her pocket to pry it out, then used her wet paw to dip it into the water. With a little stretching, Kitty was able to feel the solid end of the brush hit one of the objects. She grinned, she had it! She picked at the item, trying to pull it out of the pond's floor. She tried mining it out when she felt something odd. The brush almost seemed to melt in her paw, but then grow solid again. Quickly she pulled it back out to see if CK's paintbrush was all right.

Everything was fine according to her eyes.

So she shrugged it off and tried to pry another object out. Again, the brush melted and hardened. Kitty quickly pulled out the brush and scanned it over more thoroughly. The brush at the top was wet and the steam was solid. Fine as a paintbrush should be. It was then she decided to stop allowing her minds to play tricks on her and put the brush back in her pocket. When she looked down into the pool though, something was wrong.

Two of the objects were gone!

Kitty gazed at the pool with curiosity and shock. Now this was just getting silly, how did two objects just disappear? Was it a trick in the water? Or maybe it was her imagination? She did seem to have an active one. Her mind buzzed with a thousand questions wondering what was happening. Well, one thing for sure was that she was not going anywhere without something. And there was one last shiny object left. More determined to get it. She checked her other pocket to see if there was something useful. From within the skirt pocket she pulled out a long collar with a red heart charm on the end. Her mother gave it to her before she left home.

Maybe, just maybe, she could use the charm to hook up to whatever it was down in the pool.

Once again the cat's paw plunged into the water, this time with the charm. She stretched as far as her muscles would allow her, until the charm felt something. Kitty bit her lower lip as she concentrated. She had to be careful about this. She didn't want the object to sink or slip away. She wasn't leaving without some sort of proof of this place. Gently, and ever so cautiously, Kitty moved the charm around in attempts to hook it onto whatever was at the bottom.

She moved it to the left. Almost had it. She then moved it to the right. It went over his head. She was stretching so hard her hair was getting wet. Finally, the charm and object connected. Kitty gulped, "Ah ha!" She pulled the object up and was finally able to get a good look at it: a light blue diamond, no smaller than a salt shaker. She smiled. She shoved the charm and the diamond into her pocket.

On her way home, the cat skipped and smiled. Tonight had been a good night. She had found something of value, and she could use it to convince CK to leave the island. Judging by its shine, it could easily get the two a new house and a better life away from the island. She was so happy, she felt like she could fly. She felt as light as a feather, she felt as weightless as air, she felt the air rush against her feat. The only thing she couldn't feel was the forest floor.

When Kitty looked down, she saw that she was eight feet off the ground! She yelped, "Eep! I'm pretty sure cats can't fly!"

But there she was, flying as if it were second nature. Sure, there was no grace to her flying, but she was flying none the less. This cat was acting like a bird, and she shacked as hard as a snake's tail. Her mind buzzed again as she wondered how this was possible. And more importantly, how she would get down. She wasn't used to being this high up. A part of her wanted to get back down. But another part told her to shut up and enjoy the ride!

As Kitty went up to ten feet, she began to enjoy all the wonders of flight. The wind rushed through her hair like a symbol of freedom! It was like all the metaphoric chains on her ankles and wrists had been unlocked at long last and she was free from the strain of everyday life. She loopdee looped through the clouds, acting as if she owned them. Nothing could stand in her way, all the dragons and birds who were once the air's dominant species would have to move to the side as she zipped and whizzed by. This was what Heaven felt like.

"Ow!" the cat chirped. Suddenly, she felt pains in her sides. Kitty followed the pain to both her pockets. There, she felt a bulge from each. Quickly, she pushed her paws in and struggled to pull whatever it was hurting her out. What she found shocked her. In her left hand was a small, slender purple staff with a red, upside down, heart shaped emblem on the top. In her right hand was a long, crocked staff with a bristle at the top and blue lines running all around the stem. Kitty gasped in amazement as she realized that these were her charm and CK's paintbrush. They had transformed into magic staffs. And hers could make her fly.

What could CK's do?

She rushed home so her friend and she could figure out together! She was so excited, her heart raced like a stallion horse. How exciting this night had been, nothing could spoil this perfect night. There was no way CK could possibly say no to leaving the island now.

"What the heck did you do to my paintbrush?" the giraffe yelled. His blue eyes were drilling through his friend as she told him what had happened. CK couldn't believe what he heard, but the evidence was right in front of him. His paintbrush was transformed into a magic staff. Kitty couldn't understand why his friend was bugging out though. This was the coolest thing to ever happened to them, and he wasn't getting the big picture. Men could be so stubborn.

"C'mon CK," she said. "How could you be so mad about this? Doesn't this thing look cool?"

"Of course it does!" the tall mammal yelled as he yanked it out of her hand angrily. He looked it over, his hoof tracing over all the details. "But what if the Blot finds out? Thanks to whatever you did, we are now wizards, and we are now on his 'No Longer Getting a Holiday Card List'. Which is really sad, since I liked those cards!"

"CK," Kitty meowed sadly.

"I mean, do we even know what this thing does!?" As if it could hear CK, the brush revealed its power. From the bristle shot out a small stream of a green paint like substance. It cut through the air like a troll's ax and hit the wall quicker than you could blink. And in no short time did it hit the wall that part of it disappeared. Right before they're very eyes, the wood melted and dripped slowly towards the floor boards, until they evaporated into the atmosphere.

Both stood still, staring at the hole in the wall. CK looked nearly ready to pass out. "Well, at least we know it does that…. I wonder…"

CK held up the brush once more and aimed it towards the bare spot on the wall. He waved in gently, and once again something shot out from the bristle. But this time the stream was blue, and when it hit the point in the wall, it didn't destroy. It created! The spot reappeared, and this time it looked better than it did before.

Again, neither moved.

The giraffe than admitted as he rubbed his paw against the curly hair on the back of his neck, "Okay, that was pretty cool."

"See?" Kitty yelped into her friend's ear. "Imagine what we could do with these powers! I can fly, you can create and destroy objects at will, we could easily win the Grand Wizarding Tournament!"

The Great Wizarding Tournament was an event strictly for competing wizards. It was a series of challenges and events that pit groups of sorcerers against each other to compete for diamagics, mystical stones that granted a wizard power is used correctly. But the real reason the Tournaments took place was that it was to become Sorcerer Supreme. If one wizard happened to win all the diamagics, he or she could reassemble the Sorcerer Supreme's Crown! The crown would grant the wearer use  of all known charms, enchantments, and spells, making the wearer almost invisible!

But CK wasn't interested in power. He handed his brush back to Kitty as he explained, "Again, have fun with that."

"Oh c'mon CK," Kitty pleaded. "You have to come with me, who is Kitty Kubbles without her best friend!?"

Before CK could answer, someone knocked on the door. CK looked at Kitty, and then down at his feet before finally deciding to answer the door. As he creaked across the floor, he frowned at himself. He knew Kitty was right, they had the power to leave now. But the Tournaments? That was pure insanity. Neither of them knew the full extent of their powers, and they didn't know the rules. They were young and stupid. They'd be crushed by the first event, even if it was knitting. CK knew it was safer here than on the Mainland.

That thought quickly went away when he opened the door. In front of him was a female dog with piercing pink eyes and a small black nose. The ends of her lips pointed downward as she expressed how she felt. Her hair was smooth and jet black, going all the way down to her hips. Her skin was pale, and her cloak nearly blended with the near midnight sky. CK shivered in fright at the sight of the Blot's agent and daughter.

The Phantom Brat.

CK froze up like a deer. She sneered at him. He could tell he disliked him, and he wasn't such a big fan of her. But he wasn't going to let her know that. After staring at him for a while, she stated, "You do know the practice of wizardry is illegal here on Pagonia?"

The giraffe gulped nervously and sweat ran down his head and all the way down his neck. He shook like a tree limb in the breeze. He was so frightened, he had no Earthly idea what to say or do. It was like meeting death. He knew she knew something, but he was too paralyzed to accuse her statement false or true. He was stuck.

Kitty could see her friend was in trouble. So she hid the wands, walked up behind CK and said to the Brat, "Yup. Good night."

When she tried to close the door on the six foot tall figure though, she stopped her. She pushed the door forward and knocked CK back, knocking him out of his terrified trance. He watched as she entered the home without permission as looked around. Kitty and CK gave each other a look that meant: We're dead.

The Brat walked around and stopped at the table. She moved her long, nimble fingers across the surface and then rubber two of her fingers together. "Do you think I am a fool?"

Kitty responded, "What does that mean?"

She just stood there, smiling. She act like she didn't hear the question. Finally, the Brat replied, "You know, I like to watch the sky. It is pretty to watch whatever flies up there. Tonight however, I saw the strangest thing… I could almost swear I saw a cat."

Kitty froze now, and CK kneed her. His friend had lead the brat right to the source of the magic, and now the two were doomed. The two sat and waited as the Brat pulled something out of her clock. When  they saw what it was they gasped. It was a smooth, black stone that vibrated. The two could easily guess what it was made for: sniff out and expose the magic. The Brat knew they were hiding something. She moved the stone around in front of her, trying to get a feed on the vive. The seconds she used felt like hours as she closed her eyes and felt for anything wrong.

Then, suddenly, she stopped.

CK and Kitty looked at each other once more. Kitty then said, "Is everything-"

Kitty was cut off when the Brat picked up the table and threw it towards the kitchen. The table broke into dozens of tiny splinters and did everything in the kitchen. The cupboard were only bits of wood now. And worst of all, their contents were exposed. Inside the broken cabinet was the crooked pencil and the heart on a stick. The wands. The Brat smiled as she made her ways towards them. Her shadow seemed to stretch out over the walls as she got ever so closer. Her smirk had so much confidence in it that it would make any man kneel to her. She knew she had won. But just as she was about to take them, something bold happened.

CK became brave and grabbed them before she did. "No no ma'am! If you want your own paintbrush, you can go buy one! This one cost me a pretty penny."

As he made his way slowly back to Kitty, the Brat said, "How dare you slime! Do you realize that I could arrest you right now for treason against the Blot?"

"Yeah," CK smiled mischievously as he handed Kitty her brush. She stared at CK puzzled. Since when was his friend this brave? He was standing up against the Phantom Brat, the Brat of all people, suddenly as if by magic. Kitty wondered if any of the diamagic's powers happened to rub off on CK. The giraffe than continued to talk. "But the Blot's a butt head anyway. Tell me he can kiss my-"

"As his agent and daughter, I recommend you not finish that sentence. If you know what's good for you."

"Actually, I do…" CK said as he began to paint something with his hand. Slowly, the puddle of blue goo began to form. It became pointy and shiny, until a handle and candle formed. It was a lantern, and the candle inside it was lit. CK held it up high so the Brat could see the seriousness on his face as he explained, "And it's everything Kitty's been telling me." He then looked at Kitty. "It is now midnight. I'm convinced!"

He then smashed the lantern into the ground, making sure the candle would directly hit the dry straw all over the floor. As soon as he smashed it, the barn lit up like the inside of a dragon. The Brat had no defense against the fire as one of the flames popped and hit her dead in the face. She hollered in pain as she dappled onto the floor, hugging her face in pain. She managed to take one last peak before her vision started to blur. In the wall where the two rebellious fools used to be was now a big, gaping hole.

The two had vanished.

The Brat growled. "I will find you. Even if it's the last thing I do freak show!"
